Sampling of Summer Fun
June 17-21
This is a week of fun, hands-on day camps that campers can sign up for individually or for the whole week. For grades 1-6.
June 17
Fizzy, Gooey, Soaring Science Day Camp
Become a kitchen chemist and make ice cream, slime, a sound machine and a rocket.
• Mix and measure to make slime
• learn how to make ice cream
• Explore chemical reactions and make film canisters into rockets with alka seltzer and water
• Make a sound sandwich and play music while experimenting with vibrations
June 18
Everyday is Earth Day Camp
Soil Sammy will be your guide for hands-on environmental experiments.
• Learn more about Naper Settlement’s rain gardens and make your own water filter in a cup.
• Make a Soil Sammy grass planter
• Reuse cardboard boxes and create a notebook out of recycled materials
• Become a water scientist and test water samples from the local river
June 19
Recycled Art Camp
Beautify the world by creating useable art from repurposed items.
• Revive your garden with an old spoon turned garden marker
• Repurpose old crayons into new swirled crayons
• Make a duct tape creation
• Turn used and unwanted paper into new plantable paper
June 20
Geocaching and Letterboxing Day Camp
Locate hidden caches using a GPS device and solve riddles to find letterboxes.
• Use high-tech GPS devices to geocache on Naper Settlement’s grounds
• Explore Naper Settlement buildings in a new way, while playing a game of I-Spy
• Create a stamp, solve riddles and clues to find letterboxes around the site
• Make a trade item to put in your own cache
June 21
Sundials to Satellites
Get lost and found on the museum grounds.
• Learn about and make your own compasses and maps
• Complete a treasure hunt using a compass
• Participate in an orienteering challenge around Naper Settlement’s grounds
• Use high-tech GPS devices to geocache throughout the museum

Treasure Hunters Extreme
Get ready for summer sleuthing! Search for clues and examine evidence armed with a detective’s notepad, GPS, and a magnifying glass.
Monday - Detective Day
• Make shoe rubbings and a shoe impression
• Read about famous detectives
• Create your own find it game
Tuesday - Nature Detective Day
• Tour our new rain gardens and learn how they help the environment
• Make a Garden in a Glove to plant at home
• Find interesting items on our nature scavenger hunt
Wednesday - CSI Day
• Extract strawberry DNA
• Turn your fingerprints into a work of art
• Geocaching on the grounds
Thursday - Dick Tracy Day
• Visit the Dick Tracy statue at the Riverwalk and learn about this popular detective cartoon strip and the famous Naperville artist
• Become a sleuth like Dick Tracy by learning about fingerprints, ink chromatography, and how to write hidden messages.
Friday - History Detective
• Crack the case of the mysterious trunk
• Do a scavenger hunt in our buildings
• Solve an important mini-mystery

'Secret Seekers
Trolleys, paddleboats, and hiding spots downtown highlight this exciting behind-the-scenes camp. Curious campers will Guess the Gadget and venture into the Mansion basement.
• Paddleboating on Quarry Lake (each boat will have 3 campers and one adult)
• Visit North Central College’s archives and put together interesting puzzles from the past.
• Tour the Mansion and get a special look in the rarely seen basement
• Take a historic trolley ride for a behind the scenes experience at the collections facility and play a guess the artifact game
• Explore the history of several places and names along the Riverwalk as we geocache
• Enjoy a cupcake from Sugar Monkey and learn about the history of the building
• Have a picnic in Fredenhagen Park
• Walk through downtown Naperville and learn the history of some old businesses.
• Learn codes to write secret messages
• Make invisible ink to share secret messages

Drip, Scribble and Sketch
The museum’s 12-acres are your blank canvas as you paint, sculpt, sketch and make prints of blooming gardens and historic buildings.
• Sketch Naper Settlement’s buildings
• Make nature prints out of different mediums
• Be inspired by the art on the Riverwalk by taking our Footsteps Walking Tour
• Learn basic color principles and blend primary colors to make secondary colors

Treasure Hunters
Use clues, maps, compasses, and high-tech GPS devices to track down hidden treasures throughout our 12-acre village.
Monday - Explorers Day
• Participate in a compass scavenger hunt
• Read about Lewis and Clark and their exciting visit out West
• Paint and decorate your own treasure box
Tuesday - Tomb Excavator (Egyptology)
• Learn how mummies were wrapped
• Write in hieroglyphics
• Solve a challenging Egyptology puzzle
Wednesday - Spy Day
• Learn how to crack codes and write secret messages
• Geocache on the grounds with a GPS unit
• Participate in a disguise relay race
Thursday - Miners 49ers
• Pan for gold
• Dance a Virginia Reel
• Learn to trade and barter to get supplies you need
Friday - Pirate Day
• Dress and speak like a pirate
• Follow a treasure map to find Joe Naper’s treasure
• Practice your nautical knot tying

Archaeology
Get your hands dirty by digging up artifacts and sifting through history to uncover the past.
Monday- Introduction to archaeology
• Practice perfect excavation with a chocolate chip cookie
• Examine artifacts and write a story about the life of the people who used the items
Tuesday- Naper Day
• Visit the Naper Homestead Park (located offsite at the corner of Mill and Jefferson)
• View real artifacts from the Naper Homestead dig
• Sift through dirt from the dig project to locate small artifacts
Wednesday- Dig Day
• Participate in a simulated dig
• Help grid and map a site
Thursday- Native American Day
• Learn about flintknapping (make stone tools/arrowheads like Native Americans did)
• Help put together an archaeological puzzle
• Participate in a trading game with handmade beads
Friday- Lab Day
• Measure, document, label and weigh objects during our archaeology lab
• Make a Roman mosaic similar to those found during roman archaeological digs

Geo Quest
Experience the evolution of scavenger hunts from Letterboxing to Geocaching. Solve clues using traditional and technological orienteering, staking claim with your own unique stamp.
• Use high-tech GPS devices to geocache on Naper Settlement’s grounds
• Create a stamp, solve riddles and clues to find letterboxes around the site
• Participate in an orienteering challenge around Naper Settlement’s grounds
• Use a compass and make your own map to help navigate around the Riverwalk

Civil War Camp
Immerse yourself in the life of a soldier. Practice military drills, cook over an open fire, and camp overnight in Fort Payne! There’s even an option for a parent to join the fun!
• Participate in military drills around the grounds
• Try on uniforms and get your photo taken as a Civil War soldier
• Cook your dinner over an open fire on Friday night
• Play a game of townball
• Make and taste your own hardtack
• Sleep overnight in Fort Payne
• See a musket firing demonstration
• Share breakfast on Saturday morning
