Programs at Naper Settlement

Step back in time as you meet educators in period clothing along your self-guided route. Follow the development of a typical Northern Illinois town as it grows from a frontier outpost to a thriving agricultural and industrial community. See demonstrations of 19th century trades and crafts. To increase students’ exposure to STEM education, Naper Settlement will be debuting a new mobile scavenger hunt on Simple Machines to enhance your field trip while touring during our Time Travel Program.
  • Available: April through October from 9:30 am to 4:00 pm
  • Capacity: 400 students per day
  • Cost: $6.50 per student, $8.50 per additional adult
  • Eligibility: All grades

Living History
Bring the 1800s to life through hands-on work and play in our village during this award-winning program.

School for Tools
The lifestyle of the 1800s comes alive through sights, sounds and smells as students visit the Blacksmith Shop, Print Shop and Log House. In the one-room Copenhagen Schoolhouse, children experience what school was like before technology. Students participate in hands-on activities, guided by educators in period clothing, to introduce concepts related to chores and common trades of the time period.

Voices of the Past: The Underground Railroad in Northern Illinois
This exciting and emotive program is really theatre in our buildings with your students participating in the experience by taking on the roles of 1856 scholars. Along the way, they meet townspeople who offer many different perspectives about the issues of the day, among them an abolitionist, a southern sympathizer and a runaway slave. Where do your students stand on the issues of the day? This program is an excellent reinforcement to Civil War period classroom studies.

  • Capacity: Minimum of 40 students, maximum of 80 students (or minimum program fee of $300)

Hunt for History - Discover Where Your Community Began
Students become detectives on their quest to learn about their community, then and now. This interactive program will take students on a hunt throughout our village, where educators in period clothing will challenge their knowledge.

  • Cost: $5.75 per student
  • Eligibility: Grade 2; limited to Naperville schools only
  • Illinois Learning Standards: Goals 15, 16, 17 and 18
  • Common Core: Speaking & Listening 1, 2, 3; Language 1, 3, 5, 6; Reading 7; Math 1, 2, 8; Science ESS3
  • Length: Two hours

Giddy Up!
Saddle up and climb on your hobby horse as we clip-clop our way from the Blacksmith Shop to the Conestoga Wagon and sites throughout the museum campus. Our staff will guide your group to five stops during this engaging 90-minute program as they learn the importance of horses to farmers and settlers moving westward in the 1800s. This program can also be brought to your school or location.

Learning Objectives
• Discover how horses helped pioneers settle the prairie.
• Use movement, song, sound, smell and touch to learn about the basic needs and care of the horse.
  • Available: June through September
  • Cost: $7 per student
  • Eligibility: Ages 4-7 groups of 10 or more
  • Length:  1½-hour program

Your group must have a confirmed reservation to visit Naper Settlement. Call well in advance, as some programs fill up quickly. Before calling, please have the following information ready:
